The Massachusetts Office of Student Financial Assistance, a division of the Department of High Education, is pleased to announce the availability of applications and acceptance of nominations for the 2017 Christian A. Herter Memorial Scholarship. The Herter Scholarship was created by the Massachusetts Legislature to identify and recruit disadvantaged high school students in the 10th and 11th grades who display strong academic promise but whose socio-economic background and environmental conditions may inhibit their ability to attain a post- secondary education. The Herter Scholarship provides an incentive for student to complete high school and pursue higher education at an eligible post-secondary institution. The Hood Sportsmanship Scholarship is now available to New England high school student athletes with a $5,000 scholarship toward furthering their education at a two or four year accredited college or university. To be eligible, high school seniors must have displayed a high degree of sportsmanship while participating in a varsity high school sport. These students also must have earned a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher and performed volunteer work in the community. Students will be asked to write an essay explaining how they display sportsmanship and integrity on and off the field. The panel of judges will select three students from each of the six New England states as the scholarship winners. Mark Bavis Leadership Foundation Scholarship The family and friends of Mark Bavis have established a foundation in Mark’s name to preserve his memory and to perpetuate the principles by which he lived every day and through which he touched the lives of many. Clarkson University is pleased to offer the Clarkson University Leadership and Achievement Awards Program. These awards are designed to annually recognize students in their junior year who demonstrate strong leadership qualities, positively impact their school and local community, and have a proven academic record. The Leadership Award is $15,000 per year, totaling $60,000 over 4 years. The Achievement Award is $12,000 per year, totaling $48,000 over 4 years. Information is available in the Guidance Office. Recipients must be nominated by June 1, 2017.
Once again the Italian Cultural Center of Western Massachusetts, Inc. announces the availability of the Italian Cultural Center Scholarships for 2017. These scholarships are available to Seniors of Italian heritage who are attending high school in Western Massachusetts. The application for the scholarships can be found on the website www.iccwm.org under the Scholarship tab. Deadline is April 1, 2017.
The Pioneer Valley Women’s Running Club Annual Scholarship 2017 is awarded annually to a female high school runner. PVWRC is the first and largest all women’s running club in Northern CT and Western MA. Open to all area women, of all ages and abilities, the PVWRC is dedicated to promoting good physical health and spiritual fitness through running, education, social endeavors and charitable ventures. PVWRC is a civic-minded club that hopes to support a female runner in its local community through this annual scholarship fund. The scholarship aims to reward a well-rounded, intelligent, civic-minded, college bound high school senior who’s passionate about running. Applications are available in the Guidance Office. The Christopher A. Ostrowski Memorial Art Scholarship was established in 1998 in memory of Christopher A. Ostrowski who died during his senior year. Christopher demonstrated an interest in an art career and appreciated the efforts of the Westfield High School Art Department for cultivating this interest. The Scholarship will be awarded to a student interested in continuing their education at a post secondary level. Primary consideration will be given to students who wish to further their education in the field of art or art related fields. Consideration will also be given to students who have taken art courses for a vocational pursuit. For more information please visit the Guidance Department or the Art Department. The Dan Trant Scholarship seeks to perpetuate the memory of Dan Trant and all those who died on September 11, 2001. It aslo seeks to encourage the students of Westfield High School to strive for academic and athletic excellence, and to give back to the community by using their talents to help others. While the selection will be based substantially on academic and athletic achievement, strong consideration will also be given to candidates’ civic involvement, volunteerism and other efforts to improve the community. Daniel Patrick Trant was born in Westfield on May 15, 1961. Dan grew up on Woodmont Street and attended Moseley Elementary School from 1966-1972. He spent much of his youth playing wiffle ball, street hockey and other sports within Moseley’s comfortable confines. After graduating from Moseley Elementary School, Dan attended North Middle and Westfield High School, before heading to Suffield Academy and then to Clark University in Worcester. It was while trading bonds for Cantor Fitzgerald that Dan was killed on September 11, 2001 when flight #11 was hijacked on route from Boston to Los Angeles and crashed intentionally into the North Tower of New York’s World Trade Center where he worked on the 104 floor. The Dan Trant Moseley School Scholarship has been established in memory of Dan. This Scholarship seeks to perpetuate Dan’s memory while also seeking to encourage and assist graduating seniors from any of Westfield’s three high schools who attended Moseley School and will attend college or technical school ager their graduation. Wendy’s is a believer in creating opportunities for people in our communities, especially through high schools. Wendy’s scholarship and awards program celebrates exceptional student-athletes and supports high school education. In partnership with the Heisman Memorial Trust, Wendy’s High School Heisman awards scholarships annually to student in all 50 states who excel in athletics, academics and community leadership.
The Massachusetts Association of Women in Law Enforcement is pleased to announce that they will be offering a scholarship to be used by students to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice. All candidates will be evaluated based on their achievements in relation to the entire pool of applicants. Applications are available in the Guidance Office and must be post marked by March 31, 2017.

2017 Westfield Kiwanis Club Good Citizen Award will provide a $500.00 award to one student at each of Westfield’s three high schools: Westfield High School, Westfield Technical Academy and St. Mary’s High School, and at Southwick-Tolland Regional High School. The award is for volunteer community service to school, church, and/or community, and is not based on scholarship. It is given to students in any year of high school to encourage selfless community service. Applications are available in the Guidance Office. To be eligible, entries must be postmarked no later than April 15, 2017.

The Josephine Petros Nursing Scholarship. The family of Josephine R. Petros will sponsor this scholarship to a Westfield High School Senior in the amount of $500.00 who plans on attending college to pursue a career in Nursing. Applications are available in the Guidance Office. Deadline is May 1, 2017 and must be returned back to the Guidance Office.
Eleanor Larabee Career Center/Guidance Scholarship. The family and friends of Eleanor Larabee will again sponsor scholarship awards to two seniors. The scholarship is presented in memory of Mrs. Larabee, a dedicated member of the staff at Westfield High School who cared deeply about the students at WHS. Applications are available in the Guidance Office and must be returned back to the Guidance Office by May 1, 2017.
The Francis X. Martone Memorial Scholarship. The family of Francis X. Martone will be offering their annual scholarship again this year. This scholarship will be awarded by Dr. Jane Martone to a worthy senior who she feels represents the qualifications needed for this award. Applications are available in Guidance. Due date is May 1, 2017. Applications must be returned to the Guidance Office.
The Ray McDonald Scholarship. Is now available to our Westfield High School seniors. This scholarship’s criteria seeks an average student who has played a sport at WHS. Applications are
available in the Guidance Office and must be returned to the Guidance Office by May 1, 2017.
The Janice C. Butcher Memorial Scholarship. The Westfield Woman’s Club will again be offering the Janice C. Butcher Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is for a senior of Hispanic Heritage who attends school in Westfield (may or may not have attended Franklin Avenue Elementary School) and has been accepted into a 2 or 4 year college. Applications are available in the Guidance Office, and must be returned back to Guidance by May 1, 2017.
Westfield Girls LaCrosse – Gary O’Grady and Bob Stoops Scholarships are now being offered. For several years, Westfield Girls Lacrosse has offered one scholarship to a worthy graduating high school senior who satisfies the scholarship’s application requirements. This scholarship – the Gary O’Grady Scholarship- is named in honor of Mr. O’Grady, a respected founder, board member, coach and long-time supporter of Westfield Girls Lacrosse. In 2016, Westfield Girls Lacrosse offered a second scholarship the Bob Stoops Scholarship – this scholarship is awarded to a worthy graduating high school senior who also satisfies the new scholarship’s application requirements. The scholarship is named in honor of Mr. Stoops – a big time supporter of Westfield Girls Lacrosse as well as a long-time member and coach. Applications are available in the Guidance Office.
